Traveling Abroad
- Do I have to be a member of Modesto Sister Cities
International?
Yes, since this is a function of Modesto Sister Cities
International, all travelers need to be members of MSCI. This can be done
at the minimum level of $20.00.

- Do I have to speak a foreign language?
No. As with all foreign travel, there are simple phrases
and words that will make the experience more pleasant. Nothing pleases the
people more than our trying to communicate in their language. We will
provide you with some information at Orientation. Their English language
is limited. Negotiating for meaning is one of the exciting joys of this
experience.
- Who do I stay with?
The Exchange committees work very hard to match up students
based upon the information in their application. Normally students are
hosted by the same gender. Occasionally because of the gender mix of
foreign and American applicants it is necessary to host students of the
opposite sex. However, Japanese rules dictate that there must be a sibling
of the same sex and near the age of the American student. In these rare
circumstances parental approval is obtained first.
Students traveling to France may not be asked to host a French student.
This is a new program designed to cultivate interest in the French culture
and language. Currently, French students and interns are hosted by various
families in Modesto.
- What is the food like?
Japanese and French cuisines are considered among the
worlds finest. They are fresh and healthy and you will be pleased with the
many new dishes you will get to sample.
- How much money do I need to bring?
Because students are the guests of the City of Kurume, all
tours and travel expenses and food is provided. Spending money should be
limited to no more than $200 and $100 should more than suffice. The only
things students may wish to purchase are snacks and souvenirs. Cash or
Traveler’s Checks are easily exchanged for yen.
Students traveling to France will be doing so at their own expense. They
will be hosted by a family which means they will not need to pay for their
meals unless they choose to dine at cafes and restaurants. Students should
also consider the cost of language course in which they wish to enroll.
Spending money should be limited to no more than $1000.
- Do I need shots?
No. Japan is one of the cleanest, healthiest countries in
the world and no special inoculations are required. Currently, France does
not require any special inoculation.
HOSTING a Japanese Student
- What kind of accommodations do I need to offer the
Japanese student?
It is nice if the student can have their own room, but they
are accustomed to small living quarters and can certainly share a bedroom
with a gender appropriate student and a bathroom with the family.
-
What kind of dietary needs should I be aware of?
Allergic information would be included in the student
packet you will receive.
-
How much entertaining should I plan -- do I have to do
big things?
They are here to experience American life, just as you
normally live it. The schedule provided by MSCI is very full, and you may
spend the weekends as you wish, but traveling long distances is not
recommended.
-
What if we don't get along?
This seldom if ever happens. If there is a problem notify
program coordinators immediately and it will be dealt with.
-
What if there is an emergency?
You will be provided with contact numbers and any situation
that arises will be overseen by coordinators. Just as our students, they
are covered by insurance to meet medical needs.
-
How expensive is it to host?
Since MSCI provides the tours and activities, the cost
should not burden you. Elaborate or expensive gifts and entertaining is
not necessary. Do what is comfortable for your family.
- Should I give him/her a house key?
No. They are always under the supervision of either your
family or MSCI. You will be transporting them to/from the daily meeting
point.
- Do you have to live in the Modesto city school area
to host?
Since our pick up and drop off locations for daily tours
are in Modesto, you should consider the travel time.
